  “Never met one, so I can’t say?”

  His grin widened even further. “How do you feel about sugar-mummies?”

  She arched her eyebrows. “What’s with all the strange questions?”

  “Weeell.” He drew out the word as the smile still played on his mouth. “As of yesterday I’m officially unemployed. I’m thinking of applying to join the FBI but it’s notoriously hard to get a job with-”

  “Are you serious?” she interrupted, her eyes wide with shock as she sat up.

  “I’m serious.” Nic shifted to his back and set his head on his folded arm. An ear-to-ear grin splitting his face, he said, “Cabrera died a very painful death at the hands of his number two, Diego Montes. And apparently Nic Gavilan’s been in the army this whole time and just got discharged. Honorable of course! I think I’ve even got a medal or two.”

  Melanie’s heart jolted and her excitement soared. She cupped her hands over her mouth. “Are you serious?”

  His eyes, bright with laughter, gazed at her. “I’m serious, baby.”

  Without warning, she launched herself into her arms. This time there were no tears, only smiles. “You’re really back.”

  She surrendered into strength of his arms, for the first time in a long time confident that they wouldn’t let her go. In the morning, he woke up so they could go to the local coffee shop together. To anyone else it would’ve been inconsequential. For her it was everything. For the first time in fifteen years they could walk outside in daylight, together holding hands.

  Finally they could start their forever.
